What is Strive?

STRIVE is a motivational scholarship program for targeted seniors at Geneseo High School, sponsored by the Geneseo Rotary Club with support from Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois.  Several Rotarians have been involved as speakers and Linda VanDerLeest, high school guidance counselor has also been instrumental.

To be eligible for the program, students must first be invited to participate and express an interest by completing a commitment form.  Criteria for participation are:

· Maintain a minimum of a “C” average

· Have an attendance record of 90% or better

· Improve his/her grade point average

Students have been identified as those who have the ability to improve in these areas by extending some additional effort, or STRVING a little harder for success.  Students meet monthly with Rotarians, at which time they hear life stories, including challenges faced and obstacles overcome.  Rotarians encourage the students and provide support.

The STRIVE Scholarship winner is the students who has completed the commitment form, has met the requirements and who has improved his/her grade point average the most during the first three quarters of the senior year.   The winner receives a scholarship for one year’s tuition to Black Hawk College.  In addition, scholarships ranging from $250 to $400 are awarded to STRIVE participants on behalf of Rotary.
